Chapter 18

The Test

Daniels

The pounding of little feet came up the stairs toward my bedroom as I snuggled with Lincoln on my bed, watching a movie. “Faith!” Bates’s voice rang out. “Mom wants you to come shopping with us!”

Lincoln woke up and stretched. “What’s going on?”

“Shopping, I guess.”

Seconds later, Bates and Sonia shot through my door and onto my bed, giggling and laughing. They made me smile.

The first day Bates and Sonia had moved into Sarah and Brady’s house, I had to get used to noise. The mere sound of the tinkering of toys being played with, or children’s laughter, was new and surprising at times. When the honeymoon period faded, there were times we struggled with establishing safety when the fear of abuse came. Mostly with Bates. After we’d worked past the big triggers, Bates felt safe enough to show his frustrations, knowing Brady or Sarah wouldn’t react with physical harm. From there, we had become semi-normal with the good old-fashioned arguments that came with a family. Noise filled the house as much as it did with any home, and today was no different.

The house was alive with people getting ready for Thanksgiving. Lincoln and I took up residence in my bedroom for the little bit of time we had together. It wasn’t often he and I could enjoy time alone. We always seemed to miss each other.

None of the guys needed to go to work today, but Kayden and Tyler had gone to the title company to sign papers for our fixer-upper house. By the end of today, we should be homeowners. Excited at the possibility of owning the house today, I wanted to check out home improvement stores to get ideas, but Lincoln convinced me to lay low instead. We’d have time later for that, now that I’d convinced them to let me help out with the remodel.

With the McGuire’s house full with crazy family here for the holidays and the wedding, the two of us ended up at my house, which was surprisingly the lesser of the two chaotic homes, and we decided to spend it watching a movie.

It was mid-morning, and we had a lot of things ahead of us. I needed to grab my dress from the bridal shop and then pick up the cake at the store. Even though we had three days before the big event, the cake shop closed for the holiday and wouldn’t open back up until the start of next week. So not only did we need to pick up the cake, we had to find some way to freeze it until the wedding. On top of that, we needed to prepare for Thanksgiving.

I tickled Sonya as Bates climbed over us to Lincoln, trying to get him. “Wake up!” he demanded. “My mom wants us to help her get all the stuff for Thanksgiving and the wedding.”

I groaned and glanced over to Lincoln who now wrestled with the kid. “Where’s your mother in all of this?”

“I don’t know.” Lincoln shrugged, then went back to roughhousing with Bates.
